Capcom's latest publication of its first-quarter earnings results shows that there is a new game from its beloved horror franchise that is now the best-selling "Resident Evil" game in its history.
With this recent achievement, this game dethrones the long-time best-selling game in franchise history, "Resident Evil 5," which held the top spot for a long time and has remained up there for over a decade.
Capcom Unveils New Best-Selling 'Resident Evil' Game
According to the data from Capcom's first quarter earnings, "Resident Evil 2" Remake has now reached 19.75 million units sold worldwide, officially surpassing "Resident Evil 5's" long-standing total of 19.01 million copies.
Capcom noted that "Resident Evil 5" sat below 19.01 million as of the most recent quarter and failed to chart within the top ten sellers, effectively closing off any path for it to reclaim the top spot.
"Resident Evil 2" Remake is on pace to become the first game in franchise history to cross 20 million units sold, needing only roughly 250,000 more copies to get there. Based on recent sales momentum, that milestone could arrive within the coming months, marking a significant achievement for a remake of a PlayStation 1 era title originally released back in 1998.
Remake Defeats Classic 'Resident Evil 5'
Originally launched in January 2019, "Resident Evil 2" Remake reimagined the 1998 survival horror classic with modern visuals, over-the-shoulder gameplay, and redesigned environments. The game did so while keeping the original story centered on Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield.
Nearly seven years after its release, the remake has continued adding new players through steady catalog sales rather than relying solely on its initial launch window.
"Resident Evil 5," which debuted on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2009 before later ports to additional platforms, previously held the franchise record for years thanks to featuring returning protagonist Chris Redfield alongside newcomer Sheva Alomar.
While "Resident Evil 5" remains the second best-selling entry in the series at 19.01 million copies, "Resident Evil 2" Remake's steady, long-term sales performance has now pushed it firmly ahead. Capcom's data shows "Resident Evil 2" Remake also climbing faster than "Resident Evil 5" on a per-quarter basis, further widening the gap between the two titles going forward.
Total Sales of the 'RE' Franchise
Beyond individual game rankings, Capcom's report confirmed that the "Resident Evil" series as a whole has now surpassed 213 million units sold worldwide.
That figure has reportedly pushed "Resident Evil" ahead of Square Enix's "Final Fantasy" series in lifetime sales, positioning "Resident Evil" as the third best-selling Japanese video game franchise overall, trailing only Mario and Pokémon.
"Resident Evil Requiem," the franchise's newest entry, has also performed strongly since its February 2026 launch, surpassing 8 million units sold within just five months. Alongside this, it is now regarded as the fastest-selling game in franchise history, as per Capcom.
With Capcom continuing to invest heavily in both new mainline entries and additional remakes, including the "Resident Evil 4" Remake climbing the sales charts at an even faster pace last quarter, the franchise's overall lead over competitors like "Final Fantasy" appears likely to keep growing in the months ahead.
