This NI town has the worst parkers in the country according to study

It's a driving skill many people cannot quite manage and when it comes to poor parking in town centres, one NI town has come out on top.

New research from road markings supplier BPF Roadmarking has discovered the towns in Northern Ireland with the most parking offences per population between January and December 2019.

Magherafelt saw a total of 3,675 parking offences (1,920 off-street and 1,755 on-street) for a population of 8,805.

In second and third place were Newry and Enniskillen, which saw a percentage by population of 41.4 and 28.2 respectively.

Belfast saw the greatest total of parking offences, with 51,308 during the year, but only placed 6th in the overall list when compared with the population. Newry and Londonderry followed with 11,175 and 10,665 respectively, but Derry fell to 19th with the size of its population.

Roisin Maguire from BPF Road Markings said, “Evidently, it’s not that those who live in these towns are racking up the parking offences, but a combination between residents and visitors.

"As to why Magherafelt is seeing a heightened number compared to larger cities may have something to do with a lack of parking options or shorter parking allowances.”
