This Morning viewers in flood of tears as soldier proposes to girlfriend live on show - before they've even had a 'first date'

This Morning viewers were left in a flood of tears after a soldier proposed to his girlfriend live on the show - after having not seen her for six months.

Grenadier Guard Greg, who was stationed in the Falklands, hadn't seen or spoken to his partner Mercedes for months before the surprise.

Greg was supposed to see his girlfriend on Valentine's Day, but severe weather left him unable to travel.

Mercedes was doing a tour of the studio with her daughter, Ava, when Eamonn Holmes revealed to her she was the "star of the show".

A video message from Greg was then shown to Mercedes, before the soldier walked into the studio and proposed.

Getting down on one knee, he said: "Will you make me the happiest man?"

An emotional Mercedes said "of course" before the couple joined Eamonn and Ruth on the sofa.

Mercedes said: "I would've got dressed up!"

She added: "He's not normally this romantic. When we first met, we were trying to get that first date. We were always busy, he was always in the Army, so I don't think we've had a first date yet."

Asked about his new fiancé, Greg said: "She's just a really strong individual who keeps me going. Everything that I go through, she goes through.

"It does take its toll, we all miss our family and that, so coming back just makes everything whole."

The pair were then given another massive surprise as Eamonn and Ruth presented them with an all inclusive holiday in the Dominican Republic to celebrate their engagement.

Viewers were left in tears after the proposal.

One said: "That was so lovely, my heart."

Another wrote: "Awww true love is out there congrats #ThisMorning."

A third viewer said: "This Morning are really setting me off again today with this proposal..... congratulations to the couple. I can't stop crying. I'm so happy for them."
