This Morning viewers brand Phillip Schofield 'reckless' for suggesting pubs should reopen

This Morning's Phillip Schofield has been slammed by viewers for suggesting that pubs should reopen.

Pubs shut their doors on March 23 following the Government's strict lockdown rules to curb the spread of coronavirus.

Some businesses are now beginning to reopen their doors, but Britain's pubs are being forced to remain shut for the time being.

Phil suggested that people could go for a pint if they 'weren't mixing too closely' (ITV)

But ITV presenter Phil argued that people should be able to 'get a pint'.

Speaking to a panel alongside Holly Willoughby, he said: "We now know how to socially distance, we're getting better and better at it."

He added: "There is a pub garden, a business that can open.

"Mentally we're all going crackers... I'd open the pubs, let's get us out there.

"So long as we're not mixing too closely, let's go and have a pint!"

But Holly suggested that people may be less likely to stick to social distancing rules if alcohol was involved.

This Morning viewers took to Twitter after the comment, with some branding Phil 'reckless'.

One said: "Schofield suggesting pubs reopening in front of tens of millions of viewers is reckless stuff".

Another wrote: "We are not all desperate to get back to the pubs. Don't want to mix with people at the best of times".

A third said: "Well..as someone who works in a restaurant/pub I see so many people in my area not abiding by the rules... I am dreading it once I'm serving alcohol again.... people cant abide it when sober!"

"Schofield's Covid-19 priorities......pubs open, soaps on".

This Morning continues weekdays on ITV at 10am.
