This Morning's soap expert issues apology after wrongly confirming Corrie star's 'exit'

This Morning's soap expert Sharon Marshall was forced to apologise after wrongly announcing a Coronation Street exit live on air.

Sharon was on the ITV lunchtime show today with Holly Willoughby and Joel Dommett, as she discussed the upcoming storylines on the ITV soap. She defended the soap as some had complained there were too many dark storylines about.

Recently, viewers have seen Ryan receive life-changing injuries after he was hit by acid in a botched attempt at an attack on Daisy by her stalker Justin, whilst Amy has been talking to the police after what happened between her and Aaron.

In her attempt to defend the soap, Sharon revealed some of the more light-hearted storylines coming up.

"People are saying 'we want the humour' and the humour is still absolutely there. Coming up you've got Mary thinking she's off on an Italian getaway with Brian. Mary with stars in their eyes is something we all love to see. Will her hopes be dashed?" she said.

"Ruthie Henshall is joining in a guest appearance, safely, this will though mean an exit for Glenda Shuttleworth. Can I officially say on this sofa, can we please have her back," she said, before later taking to Twitter to clarify she was wrong.

Writing on social media, she shared: "I am the biggest idiot. The iconic Jodie Prenger is NOT leaving Corrie. Glenda is staying. I am so so sorry, I got my wires crossed. She is staying. She is fabulous! @thismorning."

Glenda arrived back on Coronation Street last August, where she quickly found her footing behind the bar in the Rovers Return.

Speaking about her role at the time, Jodie said: "I know I sound like a soppy sod, but it’s been on my bucket list to be in Coronation Street since I was little. It’s an honour, it truly is a very special moment in my life.

"To be part of something my family and I have loved for so long. And what a character, oh I have to say, total dream part. I can't wait for you all to meet fun and sassy Glenda, George Shuttleworth's sister. I love Tony Maudsley already, what a fella!"

She added: "Your first day on the cobbles is one of the most nerve wrecking experiences you’ll go though and everyone was just so gloriously lovely, kind and welcoming. It was, and is, everything I expected, and more."

Producer Iain MacLeod also shared at the time: "Glenda sails in fresh from the cruise ships with a whiff of the exotic, quickly making best friends and enemies in equal measure. The character is loads of fun and has echoes of classic Coronation Street females of old. Jodie is a fabulous talent and we are all very excited to have her aboard."
