This Morning's Phillip Schofield slammed for 'harsh' comments live on air

This Morning returned to our screens for its final episode of the week on Friday, and host Phillip Schofield landed himself in hot water with viewers.

Phil was joined by Holly Willoughby, and as ever, the pair were joined by a number of guests to discuss the topics of the day. There were also a few rounds of the show's well-known competition Spin to Win.

The contest sees viewers enter and then wait for a winning phone call live on air. To be in with a chance of winning, the person on the other end of the phone must give Holly and Phil the "phrase of the day".

But as the first potential winner's phone rang, Holly said: "Come on is that your phone? Are you..." before she realised someone had answered and stopped talking. After a few second of silence, Phil said: "Nope! You waited for the telly to catch up, Sarah".

The caller, Sarah, then said: "Good golly miss Holly" [the phrase needed to win] but it was too late. Phil said: "You've got to pick it up and go for it, sorry. Moving. Next one. It's harsh, I know, but them's the rules".

Fans of the show seemed to think Phil should have let Sarah play. Taking to Twitter, Craig said: "That was harsh, the season of goodwill???" Vicky said: "Ooh Phil that was a bit mean", while Charlie said: "Totally unfair they didn't let that woman play".

The next caller, Lisa, answered and won £1,000 on the wheel.

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV and the ITV Hub
