This Morning's Phillip Schofield responds as he's blasted for Boris Johnson 'selfie-gate'

When politics and live telly collides, anything and everything can happen.

So it's no surprise that some This Morning viewers were left fuming over Boris Johnson's interview on the ITV show.

But it was less about than what the current Prime Minister had to say but instead hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield's "giggly" and "selfie-taking" approach.

The presenting duo were slammed by fans as the interview comes days after they quizzed Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

"Phil and Holly just made that worse by giggling and taking selfies with Boris...oh wow #ThisMorning," said one.

Another commented: "Well that was rather cosy wasn’t it, nice selfie at the end to top it off."

Whilst a third fumed: "Remember when @Schofe was national treasure and now we all know he really just lives up Boris Johnsons a*****e. He played us. He's cancelled."

But now Phillip has taken to Twitter to respond to the barrage of flack.

The 57-year-old said: "Can I point out that if Mr Corbyn had asked for a selfie, we would have happily obliged."

Though it doesn't to appear to have softened the situation as fans replied that the action has "lost" This Morning viewers and the presenter has "gone down in our estimations" amongst the 1.7k replies.

Much of the outrage has occurred after Phillip encouraged Jeremy Corbyn to apologise for any anti-Semitic comments made by the party.

Now viewers feel that that they gave Johnson an "easier" time.

Holly did however press the PM on the column he wrote in 1995 which re-emerged last month.

In the piece, the Tory leader said that single mums were producing a generation of "ill-raised, ignorant, aggressive and illegitimate children."

The mum-of-three said: "This will get dragged up because you are the Prime Minister... you branded single mothers irresponsible," before telling him: "That's going to hurt feelings."

Johnson un-confidently responded: "Of course, of course, if, if, if, if stuff is...

"But I don't think this is the time to talk about articles that were written a very long time ago."

This Morning airs weekdays at 10.30am on ITV.
