Phillip Schofield brands Matt Hancock's new rules 'utterly bonkers' in tense interview

This Morning presenter Phillip Schofield told Health Secretary Matt Hancock the government's latest guidelines were "utterly bonkers" in an awkward interview on Tuesday.

After Phil and his co host Holly Willoughby snapped on air on Monday and ranted about the confusing new guidelines, Hancock said he felt it was important to come on air and answer questions directly.

He argued that the guidelines were clear, and that there was no confusion as he had spoken to his constituents and they understood what was expected of them.

Phillip questioned the rules about only seeing one person from a household at a time, even if it is your parent.

Phillip argued it was affecting people's mental health because they are desperate to see their loved ones, particularly their parents.

"How come I can only see one parent, but I can hire a cleaner?" asked Phil.

"One at a time is fine," replied Hancock, before reminding people about hygiene and that you should meet outside and not inside.

Phillip asked if this meant you would have to choose one parent to see, but Hancock replied that you could see the other parent ten minutes afterwards.

"But don't you see that's utterly bonkers?" asked Phillip.

"No," Hancock replied emphatically.

"It's really important that the principle is we don't want large groups of people gathering.

"You're making the case there that you could have two people meeting two people, but you've got to have a line somewhere."

He went on to clarify that a public place does not necessarily mean a park, and it can be a path outside your house.

He said the government is not recommending you meet in the garden, because you are likely to have to walk through the house to get there, and the risk of transmission is much higher indoors.
