This Morning's Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford have unexpected spat live on air

In showbusiness, they say you shouldn’t work with children or animals.

But Ruth Langsford appeared to add ‘husband’ to that list today when she had an unexpected row with her This Morning co-host Eamonn Holmes.

The pair, who have worked as a couple together on the ITV programme for many years, had a little on-air spat about his tendency to “whitter on” and drag out segments.

It seemed to come from nowhere as Ruth scolded her hubby for talking too much during links - to which Eamonn, speaking of today's discussion about sweating, suggested she was getting too stressed and hot under the collar.

Ruth then hit back while introducing Vanessa Feltz’s phone-in about whether you should take back your ex partner, suggesting that she would “soon have an ex” herself.

But don't worry, it was all in jest, and Eamonn couldn't help giggling as Ruth jokingly lambasted him.

“That’s what you have to ask yourself, why are they your ex in the first place?” she quipped.

“You thinking about that?”

It didn't end there - when Vanessa's phone-in aired, Eamonn revealed that he and Ruth once had a furious row that nearly led to their split.

"Twenty plus years ago, I tried to make Ruth my ex," he began.

But Ruth interjected: "It was our first row, don't be so dramatic."

He continued: "I said that's it, it's not working, goodbye. I went to close the door and she pushed it back, and do you know what she said to me?

"Oh, don't be stupid."

Ruth added: "And we have been rowing ever since."

It’s not the first time the bickering pair have had giggles together on the show - earlier this week Ruth was left in tears of laughter when Eamonn made a cheeky admission following a rather serious segment.

After speaking to Martin Lewis about being falsely used in an ad campaign, Eamonn, 59, then told viewers that he once had his name attached to a fake ad - for erectile dysfunction pills.

He said: "In my case, mine was brought to my attention by a doctor, who was very angry at me lending my name to this.

"The thing that gets me is, why choose me? Why should I be the face of erectile dysfunction?"

Ruth, Martin and other members of the This Morning crew then began to giggle when a screenshot of the ad was shown which read: "Over Two Decades Of A Happy Marriage Thanks To Eamonn Holmes Erectile Dysfunction Pills."

The Northern Irish host then quipped that viewers no longer had to wonder why Ruth always looked so happy.

This Morning airs weekdays at 10.30am on ITV.
