This Morning's Dr Chris warns coronavirus vaccine could take decades

This Morning 's Dr Chris explained to hosts Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes that a coronavirus vaccine could take a long time to perfect.

They were discussing the latest health headlines, including the news that a new Oxford vaccine could provide "double protection" from coronavirus.

"It is good news, the situation is that more than 100 scientific teams researching vaccines, it's a race to get the vaccine out there, because if they do, it's a huge market, the world will want it," said Chris.

"The latest research, two results from the team in Oxford and the team in America, and they've produced a vaccine that produces an increase in neutralising antibodies, which attack the virus and kill it.

"Plus, an increase in cells called Killer T cells, and they can hang around a bit longer."

He continued: "The problem with a vaccine is, because this is a new virus, we don't know if a vaccine will have a longer term effect, whether the effect will wear off in time, and you may have to have a booster, or how strong a response you get to the vaccine, is it strong enough to overcome the disease? But it's very encouraging.

"When this news broke days ago there was a surge in the stock markets, they responded dramatically to this good news."

Ruth then asked Chris how long he thought it might take before we have a vaccine for the virus.

"Well it's gong to be towards the end of the year, when you look at other vaccines, they took years and years and even decades to get right.

"For example HIV/AIDS has been around for 30 years or more, and we still haven't got the vaccine.

"So it's remarkable how fast the scientific community is developing vaccines."
