This Morning's Alison and Dermot in disbelief at Gateshead 'human toe' discovery

This Morning presenters Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary were left in a state of disbelief at the discovery of a 'human toe' in Gateshead that turned out to be something very different.

It was announced near the end of last year that viewer favourite Alison and X Factor host Dermot would be taking over from Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford, who had held down the Friday slot for years.

The news received a mixed reaction from fans of the ITV show and the new hosting duo certainly had a first day to remember when the headline grabbing 'human toe' story came up in discussion.

As ChronicleLive reported on Friday morning, a dog walker contacted police after she thought she'd stumbled across a toe buried in muddy field in Winlaton, Gateshead, on Tuesday afternoon.

Detectives agreed that it did appear to be a human foot and they deployed specialist police dogs and search teams to scour the area.

After hours of searching, officers discovered it wasn't a body part after all but a potato with a mushroom growing next to it.

Looking at the pictures, Alison, Dermot and guests Bev Turner and Gyles Brandreth were left stunned, with Alison shouting: "I can't believe it!".

Bev responded: "This story taps into the fear that people are walking around at the moment; the sense of panic and imminent death!"

When asked by Alison if he'd have rang the police, Giles joked: "First of all I would have called Midsomer Murders!"
