This Morning host taken aback as doctor shows what unit of alcohol really looks like

This Morning's Craig Doyle was surprised as he discovered what a unit of alcohol really looked like.

The 51-year-old presented fronted Thursday's edition of ITV's flagship daytime programme alongside Mollie King. The two were joined by Dr Zoe Williams who shared advice on how people can consume alcohol safely.

The medical expert appeared on the show as a new study from Oxford University showed that anything more than 17 units of alcohol a week can have a harmful effect on your DNA. Dr Zoe explained the observational study found people drank more than this amount were more likely to have short telomeres, which is a sign of aging.

She added: "Essentially what they are saying is drinking above healthy limits might mean you're aging more rapidly than you would otherwise." Dr Zoe said the current UK government guidelines advise adults in the UK to drink no more than 14 units per week.

She said: "The guidelines also say if you're having 14 units this should be spread across the week and you should be having at least two days a week were you don't drink anything."

The medical expert tested Craig and Mollie to pour a glass of wine as she aimed to to clear up confusion around how much volume constitutes a unit of alcohol. Dr Zoe explained: "With typical strength of wine, a unit is 125ml."

Dr Zoe compared 125ml glass to the hosts - and found both Craig and Mollie had included more than the recommended amount. Craig shot back: "Is that glass bigger?"

Dr Zoe went on to explain that a typical pint of beer contains three units of alcohol. She added: "What we all have to remember is that we all have a different capacity for drinking.

"Some people at 14 units would be just about safe whereas some people can drink more safely. If we're keeping it within 14 units then that probably is safe drinking."
