This Morning doctor explains who is eligible for new coronavirus tests and how they work

This Morning hosts Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes spoke to a doctor on the show to get answers about the new coronavirus tests announced yesterday.

Health secretary Matt Hancock pledged testing for all key workers who were displaying symptoms of coronavirus, along with their households.

Dr Phillippa Kay appeared via video link and explained the different ways key workers can be tested, including newly-built mobile test centres and home tests delivered to your door.

Dr Phillippa explained that all key workers, whose children are in school now, are eligible for these tests.

She told hosts Ruth and Eamonn that the swab must go right into the back of your mouth even if it makes you gag (ITV)

You can either register through the government's website, or your employer can register you if you work in a private care home, for example.

"There are new test centres popping up, there are also new mobile test centres which the army is involved in, and there are home testing kits," she said.

She added that there was research to check home testing was accurate as a professional carrying it out, and it seemed they were.

Dr Phillippa said key workers may have tests delivered by Amazon (ITV)

Home testing kits may be sent out by Royal Mail or even Boots or Amazon, and Dr Phillippa said home tests give results back in 72 hours, and if you go to a test centre, you will have your results within 48 hours.

"So we can keep that essential workforce moving," she said.

Dr Phillippa advised that home testing swabs must go right into the back of your mouth, even if it makes you gag, because otherwise tests might come back falsely negative if not done correctly.

And if you are a key worker displaying coronavirus symptoms, your family can also be tested so that you can be sure you do not need to self-isolate for two weeks.

Dr Phillippa called for more studies into the virus, which are beginning to happen, so we have answers about how it spreads, how people become immune, and how long immunity lasts for.

She added that we may go in and out of lockdown as the virus continues to show peaks and troughs.
