This Morning ditches Spin to Win 'household bills' prize after backlash from viewers

This Morning has ditched their latest prize of 'household bills' on their popular Spin to Win game following a backlash from viewers on social media saying it was "tone-deaf". The game first underwent a change on Monday (September 5) when 'energy bills' were unveiled as the latest addition to the prizes.

The daily game sees one lucky viewer get a call which they must answer with the phrase of the day to either spin the wheel or the balls for the chance to win a prize, The Mirror reports. One caller won their energy bills paid for four months on Monday, but many viewers said the move left them saddened and others called it 'dystopian'.

When the game returned on Tuesday, the prize had been changed to include all 'household bills'. TV presenter Phillip Schofield mentioned how his 'generous' boss had increased the offer, with the prize now covering all bills and not just energy.

But the 60-year-old sparked further criticism when he made a comment about viewers complaining. Turning to co-host Holly Willoughby, after a caller had just won £3,000, he said: "I wonder how much of that they can complain about online."

After only two days, on Wednesday (September 7) the game returned to cash prizes only with the 'bills' prize scrapped and the £3000 cash prize amounts also removed from the wheel. The cash prizes instead ranged from £800 to £2000.

Viewers were quick to take to Twitter to react to the recent change. Steph tweeted: "They’ve removed household bills." whilst Gregory said: "Household bills conveniently removed today.... #ThisMorning."

Rachel added: "They've removed the bills altogether. What a ride it's been." Linda posted: "Oh they have taken the energy bills off nowt to do with them getting a load of flack for it." as Tina wrote: "They’ve removed the patronising stuff off the wheel!"

This Morning airs weekdays on ITV and ITV Hub from 10am.
