ITV’s This Morning had quite the start today, leaving viewers with raised eyebrows and plenty to talk about as Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard battled not one, but two awkward live TV moments.
Just a day after ITV confirmed a raft of changes coming to its daytime schedule, all eyes were firmly on the morning duo to see how they’d handle the pressure. Turns out, things didn’t quite go to plan, according to Entertainment Daily.
It kicked off innocently enough. Cat and Ben were easing into the show, teasing the morning’s line-up. Cat, ever the pro, began by hyping up guest Jo Joyner, who was set to chat about her new psychological drama Little Disasters.
“The gripping psychological series starring the wonderful Jo Joyner. And she’s popping in to tell us all about it a little bit later on,” Cat told viewers.
Ben chimed in, “She’s amazing,” though he seemed a little distracted. That’s when things started going a bit haywire.
Looking off camera, Ben suddenly asked, “You alright over there, Ed?” Then he repeated, “Ed, are you alright?” sounding more concerned than curious. He followed up with a cryptic, “Little crash landing?”
Cat began giggling, and Ben reassured everyone with a quick update: “Yeah, he is okay. It’s a little collapse on Camera Two.” He kept the mood light by joking: “It is a dramatic thriller! I can understand. It’s a little collapse on Camera Two.”
Cat, still laughing, added: “He’s gone pink!” suggesting poor Ed, still unseen, was more embarrassed than injured. But just as viewers might’ve thought that would be the only hiccup, in came round two.
As the hosts continued previewing what was to come, a wide shot of the studio caught something-or—rather someone—else entirely. Sitting off to the side was radio presenter Tom Swarbrick, already in place for the “This Morning’s View” segment alongside Baroness Sayeeda Warsi.
Except Tom wasn’t quite camera-ready. He was spotted looking down at his phone, clearly unaware that he was live on national television. The camera quickly cut away, only to return a moment later to show him still preoccupied with his screen.
While social media didn’t explode with reactions, a few viewers clearly weren’t thrilled with the line-up or the unintentional cameo.“No balance again as usual FFS!” one unimpressed viewer grumbled. Another posted: “Has Tom not had enough caffeine today, he’s being a right miserable [blank] #ThisMorning.” A third chimed in: “@thismorning please get rid of Tom Swarbrick and Sayeeda Warsi #ThisMorning.”
So while the technical slip-ups were harmless enough, they certainly didn’t go unnoticed. Whether it was a rogue cameraman, a distracted guest, or a minor equipment fail, this morning’s episode proved live telly can still deliver the unexpected—even before the first interview has begun.
