This mess was dumped in Pontardawe from a Swansea city centre building

A Swansea company has been fined after waste from a premises it owned was dumped near a supermarket in Neath Port Talbot three times.

Three deposits of waste were found dumped illegally on land behind the Lidl supermarket in Ffordd Parc Ynysderw, in Pontardawe.

The mess was discovered by Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service's arson reduction team in November, 2018.

After an investigation, members of Neath Port Talbot Council's waste enforcement team visited a mixed commercial and residential building in Swansea city centre owned by Gower Way Ltd.

The officers later confirmed that the waste dumped in Pontardawe had come from the building.

Nasser Alanizy, a company director of Gower Way Ltd, attended an interview with the council's waste enforcement officers in January, 2019, and confirmed that waste found at the site in Pontardawe was from the building his company owned.

He also confirmed that he didn't have any waste transfer documents in relation to the waste removal.

The company had previously pleaded guilty at Swansea Magistrates' Court to breaching its duty of care under the Environmental Act 1990 in relation to the waste illegally dumped at Pontardawe.

At a sentencing on Tuesday, August 25, the company, represented by a solicitor, was fined £2,000 and ordered to pay full prosecution costs of £638.04 and a victim surcharge of £181.

Neath Port Talbot Council's deputy leader and cabinet member for streetscene and engineering, Councillor Ted Latham said: "This case and the heavy price paid by the offending company shows it is not OK to dump waste and damage our environment.

"We have a dedicated team of officers determined to track down anyone dumping waste in Neath Port Talbot, and our strong record of prosecutions acts as a deterrent for anyone thinking about dumping waste here."
