This meat cleaver was found hidden in a man's sock as he tried to enter city centre bar

A man has been arrested after he was caught trying to enter a popular city centre bar with a meat cleaver hidden in his sock.

Police were called to Impossible bar on Peter Street in the early hours of Sunday (December 1) after security guards made the find.

It is believed the man had been trying to enter the bar alone when he was searched by doorstaff.

The meat cleaver was seized and the man was swiftly detained by security until police arrived.

In a tweet, a spokesperson from GMP's city centre branch said: "Awesome work by the security team down at Impossible MCR finding this meat cleaver hidden in a male's sock.

"He was detained by security staff until an arrest was made."

A spokesperson for Impossible said: "In the early hours of Sunday morning a lone male attempted to enter Theatre Impossible carrying a concealed weapon.

"Fortunately we have a very robust safeguarding programme in place, which includes a thorough search policy upon entry to the venue.

"During the search we located a meat cleaver concealed in the male's sock and we immediately detained him and called the police.

"Greater Manchester Police arrived promptly and subsequently made an arrest.

"We wish to commend the police, security and venue management team for their swift response and professionalism in relation to this incident.

"We work very hard to ensure our customers can enjoy themselves in complete safety and we will continue to be highly vigilant.

"We continue to work closely with Greater Manchester Police to ensure the individual is prosecuted to the full extent that the law allows."
