Slumberland asked the question we didn't even know to when they designed the Duo 1400 2-in-1 Mattress: "why settle for just one side to a mattress when you can have two?" With one cooling, menopause-friendly side and one cosy teddy side, you're investing in a base for your bed that can do it all.
For some people, night sweats and hot flushes are unbearable all-year-round, which is why most of the best cooling mattresses focus on just one task. However, if you find yourself cooler in the winter, or you want the option to switch things up, the Slumerland Duo 1400 2-in-1 Mattress could be a dream come true.
Linda, our expert tester, has been sleeping on this since April. She's had heat waves, neck pains, and a very wriggly, light sleeper in her bed. Here's the verdict on whether it's a good way to sleep in the heat.
Slumberland Duo 1400 2-in-1 Mattress review

The Slumberland Duo 1400 2-in-1 Mattress comes in firm and medium firm. Although, from experience, it definitely sits on the firmer side. This means that it's great for back and side sleepers (our experts can testify to that).
The pocket-sprung insides are brilliant for minimising motion transfer and, with extra-support at the edges, it's great for people who share a bed, especially if that person is a fidgety sleeper.
We'll also get into the details of the way that this works as a 2-in-1 mattress, offering one cool side for hot sleepers and one cosy side for colder weather.

What's inside the Slumberland Duo 1400 2-in-1 Mattress?

It helps to know what's both on the inside and the outside of the mattress, which offers year-round comfort. You can flip the mattress twice a year, changing from the Spring/Summer side (which has a cool-touch SensIce cover to transfer heat away from the body) and an Autumn/Winter side, which has a 'Teddy bear' texture which comes with cosy wool. Hot and menopausal sleepers might want to stick with the cool side all year round, but it's nice to have the option of something a little cosier.
There's a 'new life foundation latter' which is there for support. This is crafted from 91% recycled fibres and judging by Linda's lack of neck pain, it did a wonderful job.
This is underwritten by a Truecomfort layer, which offers cushioning and more breathable layers to the mattress. It's crafted from 75% recycled PET plastic, using more than 100 plastic bottles.
Inside the mattress is 1,400, individually-cased pocket springs, which is great for keeping an open, breathable structure inside the mattress. They're also helpful for extra support and minimal motion transfer too. This means that the firmness will range between medium and firm, depending on what you choose from the site. Linda wanted a firmer mattress to support her joints and back and the Slumberland more than delivered.
On top of all that, you've got a deep-quilted, stretch-knit sleep surface that's packed with Truecomfort fillings.
Unboxing and setting up the Slumberland Duo 1400 2-in-1 Mattress
Mattresses aren't known for being easy to move around, so it's important that you can trust your delivery team. Bensons For Beds were handling the Slumberland Duo 1400 2-in-1 Mattress, so I knew we were in safe hands.
As expected, Linda said that "the delivery team from Bensons For Beds could not have been more helpful. They were exceptional and asked if I'd like the mattress taking upstairs," which is standard protocol. They also kept her in the loop with emails and updates on delivery, so she knew when the mattress would arrive as well as whether it would fit.
It's really unusual for a mattress to come with sustainable packaging: the industry just isn't there yet. Linda was pleased to note that it came in Green packaging, which is crafted from 40% green polythene from sugarcane, plus 60% recycled polythene.
Bensons also offers a free eight-year guarantee (you should only have a mattress for 10 years anyway, so that's really good) and a 40-night comfort guarantee where if you're not happy with your mattress you can exchange it for a new one. Naturally, you need a mattress protector to qualify (I'd recommend this anyway for making cleaning a mattress much easier), but it's great to have options when you're spending big sums of money.
What is the Slumberland Duo 1400 2-in-1 Mattress like to sleep on?

When we're testing mattresses, our testers are really assessing four key factors: comfort, motion transfer, edge support, and temperature regulation.
The mattress sat easily on Linda's bedframe, but she did note that it's pretty tall. At 32cm, you'll need deeper sheets. Linda actually had to go out to get new sheets, because standard sheets often stretch to 30cm, but you'll want deeper ones for 30cm.
From the get-go, Linda described the Slumberland Duo 1400 2-in-1 Mattress as "just right," she added, "I don't really like an overly-soft mattress and if it's too hard, I wake up achey. However, with the Slumberland, my neck felt great after sleeping on the mattress and the 1,400 springs offered fantastic support."

If you share a bed with someone who tosses and turns, this mattress is a brilliant peace-treaty. The Slumberland Duo 1400 2-in-1 Mattress is pocket-sprung, which naturally really helps with motion transfer. Linda said that it was virtually non-existent, "I didn't notice him turning over or getting out of bed at all. With our previous mattress, I was disturbed multiple times, so the difference was really notable."
We also like to test the edge support to see whether you can lie right at the edge of each side of the bed. "I felt safe sleeping right to the edge of the mattress - there was no fear that I was about to roll off."
The Slumberland comes reinforced at the edges which meant that both Linda and her husband could lie on each side, which "made the mattress feel bigger," according to both of them. And, if you don't share a bed, you can stretch out like a starfish.

Now, for the all-important part of the testing: whether it's cooling. Linda is a woman, of a certain age, and so she struggled with getting uncomfortably hot through the night. She was really impressed with the Spring/Summer side features and cool-touch fabric of the Slumberland. "There was only really one night where I had to fling off the duvet," she says, "I found myself really looking forward to going to bed and actually opting for a few early nights (unheard of for me!)"
Whilst the cooling features won't solve your night sweats, it does a brilliant job of keeping you cool enough to calm the hot flush.
How does the Slumberland Duo 1400 2-in-1 Mattress compare?
At around £700, the Slumberland is a really reasonably-priced mattress. The beauty of having two sides (Spring and Summer) give you two mattresses for the price of one. When you add in the 8-year guarantee and sturdy build-quality, it's a mattress that's offering really good value for money.
If you like the Slumberland Duo for its firmness and support, you have got some other options available. At the same time that Linda tested the Slumberland, Carly tested the Silentnight Lift Breathe Mattress. Whilst this isn't double-sided, it is still pocket sprung, with extra-comfortable fibres and layers that make it more of a medium mattress than a medium-firm model. It's cheaper and still comes with Bensons For Beds delivery and promises. You get less of a guarantee (5 years instead of 8), but it's still a brilliant mattress that Carly reckons will last long beyond it's guarantee.
Should you buy the Slumberland Duo 1400 2-in-1 Mattress?

The biggest compliment that you can give the Slumberland Duo is how well Linda slept on it. And it wasn't just that light, hot-and-cold, erratic sleep, it was proper, deep, consistent sleep. Linda says "this is a great choice if you're a hot sleeper. I'd recommend it to friends who have menopausal symptoms." So, if you're in the thick of night sweats or fed up of your saggy mattress, this is the one for you.
