It’s getting harder to get a takeaway in Edinburgh. With many shops closing due to illness or social distancing, getting your favourite food delivered is getting harder and harder.
And for those businesses that remain open, some of them offering delivery for the first time, it can be hard to link up with hungry customers, but no more.
A new list of ‘secret takeaways’ in Edinburgh has been created showing hundreds local favourites that don’t appear on the big apps like Just Eat.
For those who want to keep eating from local cafes, restaurants and pubs, the Secret Takeaways Edinburgh list has places doing delivery and takeaway.
The list was created by an Edinburgh-based tech startup to help local food businesses ‘who’ve had their world turned upside-down overnight by coronavirus’
Occupyd connects people with kitchen space with people who need it, their founder Callum McPherson explained: “We created the Secret Takeaway list to support local food businesses whose world has been turned upside down overnight by the coronavirus outbreak.
“We noticed, when looking for our local favourites, a lot of them are not present on the big food delivery apps. These app charge huge commissions which eat up profit margins, so we decided to compile them into a list for Edinburgh residents to easily find and support.
“In the week since launching the list, it has had over 8000 unique visits from Edinburgh diners.”
The list currently features 67 restaurants and cafes including some solid favourites, along with well known bakeries and grocers who offer delivery service.
Normally Occupyd work as an online marketplace where small businesses hire out underused space like kitchen space in a café or a hairdresser’s chair in a salon.
Callum said: “Since 2018, we’ve been known as the Airbnb for workspace. Our Edinburgh based team is here to support small businesses with new revenue streams and access to flexible, low cost workspace.
“During this difficult period, we will continue looking for opportunities to support and increase their revenue, such as the Secret Takeaways initiative.”
