This map shows who’s ignoring lockdown in Edinburgh and how many homes report Covid-19 symptoms

More than 90 per cent of Edinburgh and the Lothians is staying at home during the coronavirus lockdown, according to an app that tracks user behaviour.

Nearly ten per cent of Edinburgh households have reported at least one member showing coronavirus symptoms.

Data from over 35,000 users has been gathered to create a ‘heatmap’ of the UK showing which areas have the most Covid-19 symptoms and where people are choosing to stay home the most.

Experts have been collecting information from the public about their symptoms to see if they are following rules via the Evergreen Life app – with the data shared with NHS and data scientists.

People can log on to the health app and put in their own data to add to the picture.

The app's developers said for an area of the country to appear on the map, it had to have enough people in the sample sizes for the percentages quoted to be statistically significant.

App users are also sent guidance to protect themselves during the crisis, with tailored advice from the NHS to those deemed to be at the greatest risk of complications from the virus.

8.9 per cent of respondents reported coronavirus symptoms, with the majority self-isolating.

Symptoms can range from anything from a persistent cough to fever, as well as loss of taste and smell.

Urban areas are, perhaps unsurprisingly, seen as Covid-19 hotspots.

Researchers found the majority of cases were around London, Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester and Bristol.

More than 34,000 people have been asked if they are staying at home or continuing to go out and about.

The results are from April 9 and exclude any key workers.
