This loophole means you can drink on the streets of Glasgow during Hogmanay

With the presents unwrapped, the chocolate boxes empty and the Love Actually and Kevin Bridges DVDs having burnt holes in your retinas, the biggest night of the year in Scotland is upon us; Hogmanay.

While the powers that be seem to have other priorities than sticking on a big party in George Square like years gone by - that won’t stop thousands of us from heading out on the town with our pals to make it a night to remember.

And just so you know, you don’t have to wait till you are in the pub or club before you get the party going - as the ban on public drinking in the city doesn’t apply over New Year.

After some Sherlock Holmes-style digging, Glasgow Live noticed that the by-law on the open-air consumption of alcohol in the city is relaxed between 6pm on New Year’s Eve until 6am on New Year’s Day.

The info is available on the Glasgow City Council website , along with some clues as to why the law is relaxed on December 31 and January 1.

The by-law was introduced in 1996, and included in it the New Year exception to protect the old party in George Square - one that back in the day used to be on a par with Edinburgh’s Hogmanay bash.

And while that event has been put on the back burner, it doesn’t mean that the party can’t continue elsewhere wherever in the city you find yourself - especially given the mild weather.

Whether that means you and your pals fancy a wee fresh air swally prior to the bells or fancy a nip after while first-footing or on the way to a party or your scratcher.

Just make sure you don’t act the goat and give any extra hassle to those who have to sacrifice their own celebrations to police the streets and keep the city safe on our behalf.

Happy New Year, Glasgow!
