This London borough has been named as the greenest in the UK

The greenest, calmest place in London has been named- and it’s home to some of the capital’s most favourite parks.

The prestigious Green Flag award has been handed out for 2023 and the capital’s greenest borough has gone - once again - to Hillingdon in West London.

But this isn’t just London’s greenest spot. Hillingdon is also the leafiest spot in the whole of the UK and has bagged the official crown for ‘the greenest council area in the entire country’, having received a whopping 67 Green Flag awards for spaces in the area.

This year is the eleventh year in a row that Hillingdon has taken the top spot, with Hillingdon’s parks and green spaces “consistently meeting the stringent criteria” of being super clean, environmentally friendly and with high standards of facilities, as well as being “welcoming and community-orientated”.

The scheme is judged by Keep Britain Tidy and other environmental charities.

Cllr Eddie Lavery, Hillingdon Council’s Cabinet Member for Residents’ Services, said: “We’re committed to making Hillingdon a green and sustainable borough, with green spaces that are welcoming to residents, visitors and wildlife.“We’re proud to have held the top title for a number of green flags for more than a decade, but it’s not a position we take lightly.

“Our success is the result of all the hard work and great management of our green spaces team and the many community and volunteer groups they work closely with to keep our borough parks and green spaces to the highest standards.”

The Green Flag Award is the benchmark national standard for parks and green spaces in the United Kingdom, and in Hillingdon, there are 67 Green Flags - the most flags held by any borough both nationally and internationally.

Four were added in the 2022/23 year of judging, these were:

Others include Barra Hall Park, Bessingby Park, Churchfield Gardens and Coney Green. To view the full list visit here.
