This live map is counting the thousands of people in Leeds signing Article 50 petition right now

A petition calling on the government to revoke Article 50 and remain in the EU has surpassed one million signatures and is proving so popular that it is repeatedly crashing the Petitions Committee website.

More than 2,000 people are trying to sign the petition every single minute, 'the highest the site has ever had to deal with'.

Despite the technical problems, scores of people are continuing to back the anti-Brexit campaign, passed one million signatures shortly before 3pm on Thursday.

Number crunchers at ODI Leeds have pulled together an interactive map showing how many people in each area of the country have put their names on the list.

It shows that people in Leeds North East are the strongest supporters in Leeds, with 2,346* people signing the petition. People in Leeds East aren't as engaged though, with just 701* people signing the petition here - the lowest from any of the eight Leeds constituencies.

Bristol West is the area of the UK where the petition has had the strongest support, with 6,909* putting their names alongside the campaign.

Margaret Anne Georgiadou began the campaign on Thursday, February 14, but it's gathered hundreds of thousands of votes since Theresa May’s scathing speech yesterday (Wednesday) when she lambasted MPs across the board and told the nation: "I am on your side."

The petition says: "The government repeatedly claims exiting the EU is 'the will of the people'. We need to put a stop to this claim by proving the strength of public support now, for remaining in the EU. A People's Vote may not happen - so vote now."

It's now likely that May will seek short short extension to Brexit, with the new cut-off point set for June 30.

*All figures correct as of 3pm on Thursday, March 21. The map data updates every five minutes.
