This ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ character deserves just as much love as Rumi

Netflix’s summer hit is KPop Demon Hunters. The musical animated film takes us into the world of Huntrix, a girl group who uses KPop to protect the world from demons. And from musical bops, heartwarming storylines, and characters to love, there’s a lot to unpack.

But one thing that is really important to fans is the core three. Rumi (Arden Cho), Zoey (Ji-young Yoo), and Mira (May Hong) make up the group and the three see themselves as family. Rumi is hiding a big secret from Zoey and Mira and when it all blows up, it comes down to Rumi being on the outs. While she shouldn’t have kept her true heritage a secret, it forced Mira to reveal some truths about herself.

At the start of the movie, we learn that Mira is labeled as a “black sheep” and a “problem child.” Her family didn’t want her and she found people she thought cared about her in Zoey and Rumi. Knowing this made me feel for her when Rumi’s secret is revealed.

Rumi is part demon and, seeing as Huntrix hunt demons, she was told by Celine (Yunjin Kim) to keep it from them. But Mira saw Huntrix as her family and that betrayal and pain makes the final act of KPop Demon Hunters so much more real.

“I know our faults and fears must never be seen, but, look. I’m kind of a difficult person. Overly blunt, short-fused, highly aggressive. My whole life, those things were a liability. But somehow, with you guys, they’re okay,” Mira says in the film and that’s why I relate to her the most. She knows she’s sometimes too much to be around but she found people who cares about her.

You can see yourself in Mira

Even if you’re not a black sheep, there are elements of Mira that anyone can relate to. She just wants to find people who love and accept her and that’s a universal emotion. So much of KPop Demon Hunters is connected to Rumi’s story and her own journey with acceptance that it feels like she gets all the love but characters like Mira rule too.

She’s unapologetically herself and that’s where she journey with “acceptance” starts. She doesn’t want to change who she is but instead, find people who love her despite the parts of herself people think are “too much” and overwhelming. Which is what so many of us want.

We can have a bit of Rumi in us as well, trying to love parts of who we are despite being told their not worthy of love. But I do think that, at least for me, Mira is the kind of character I can see myself in and I just want her to have more love. So why not rewatch KPop Demon Hunters and enjoy one of the best movies of 2025 and realize that Mira is just as cool as Rumi and Zoey is right there with them. Basically Huntrix rules.
