This is why thousands of flower bouquets are being given out for free today

Tens of thousands of floral bouquets will be left around the country today, in celebration of National Flower Arranging Day.

Today, the National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies is spreading happiness by leaving flower arrangements in public places.

The bouquets will be left everywhere from park benches to shop doorsteps to city landmarks.

Jan Law, Chairman of NAFAS, said: "In the past years, each one of our 1,100 clubs, which are situated all over the UK, have taken this, our special day, into their hearts and celebrated it in a variety of ways.

"As our association celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, we all want to take the opportunity to introduce the public to our special world of flower arranging.

"The fun and friendship found in our flower clubs is a therapeutic experience to be handed on to the next generation to enjoy for many more years."

The idea of leaving bouquets for strangers as a random act of kindness originated a number of years ago in Belgium, when a local florist begun leaving flowers for people on the streets.

The concept then went viral and these have been distributed by NAFAS every year since.
