This is why there were massive queues on Market Street this morning

Hundreds of people queued in Manchester city centre this morning to get their hands on a rare collection of branded clothing.

Some waited in line on Market Street for several hours, just to be the first to get their hands on a set of rare t-shirts and tote bags from Uniqlo.

It turned out the sought-after items are a collaboration with New York artist KAWS.

The Brooklyn-based cartoonist, known for his use of 'x's on the hands and eyes of his characters, told his 2.1million followers on Instagram last week that this will be his last collection with Uniqlo.

The announcement sparked scenes of mayhem when shops opened in China yesterday, with fans running and fighting to get their hands on the limited edition clothing.

In Manchester it was a much calmer affair, with fans asked to queue outside and groups of around ten shoppers at a time allowed in when doors opened at 10am.

The Manchester Evening News spoke to a group of friends who were the first ones in line.

"We just like the collection, the culture."

"It's the style - he's started a movement in streetwear and art pieces.

"KAWS made it available for everyone, it's available worldwide, Uniqlo is affordable.

"We were pleased we got in there first!"

Uniqlo opens in Manchester

Tokyo-based chain Uniqlo returned to Manchester's high street for the first time in 15 years in April.

Hundreds of people queued for the opening with fans describing it as 'the Japanese Primark, but the quality is really good'.

Taku Morkiawa, EU CEO of Uniqlo, said at the time that their brand LifeWear is the 'perfect fit for a stylish Manchester'.

He added: "This will be our first store in the North of the UK and we chose Manchester because we know it's ready for our lifewear philosophy.

"Mancunians love to look good so they'll appreciate our classic style.

"They also love to think outside the box, so they'll enjoy our innovative approach to fabrics, cuts, and colours."
