This is why there was a large police response in Ashton-under-Lyne town centre

There was a huge police presence in Ashton-under-Lyne town centre yesterday after a street fight broke out.

Officers were scrambled to Warrington Street at around 4pm on Monday, after receiving reports of a fight.

Eyewitnesses say at least five police vehicles attended.

It is believed a brawl broke out outside the Ashton Market complex on Bow Street.

Police were alerted but by the time they arrived, most of the culprits had dispersed and fled the scene.

One 17-year-old boy linked to the incident was arrested for public order offences and assault.

Officers were seen detaining the teenager outside McDonald's and Thomas Cook on the high street.

Dozens of local residents and families watched as he was taken into custody.

A GMP spokesperson said: "We were called to reports of fighting around the Market Hall on Bow Street.

"Everyone involved dispersed but a 17-year-old was arrested for public order and assault."

Enquiries are ongoing.
