This is why there is scaffolding around the Nottingham Council House clock

The iconic Council House clock didn't quite look itself on Tuesday and that is because it is being repaired.

Scheduled work to repair the clock and its mechanism started on Tuesday (July 16).

Nottingham City Council said the work is due to last around two weeks.

Half the clock face is missing and clock hands are frozen.

The clock was designed in 1928 by Copes, a long-established local jeweller's and clock-maker.

Little John, the bell inside, was recently considered as a possible replacement for the Big Ben  chimes broadcast live every day on BBC Radio 4 while the Palace of Westminster repairs are underway.

However, engineering restriction put in place in the 1930s prevents chiming between 10.30pm and 8am.

So unfortunately, this meant Little John could not be used and now the BBC are making do with recordings of Big Ben.
