This is why the Sister, Sister songs are different on Netflix

Sister, Sister made its Netflix debut this month, with subscribers reliving the nostalgic nineties as they binge-watch the adventures of Tia and Tamera.

However, some eagle-eyed (or should that be eagle-eared?) viewers have pointed out there has been a few differences between the original classic and the Netflix version.

One particular change that has raised a few eyebrows is how some of the series’ most memorable songs have been swapped out for newer releases.

Fans will remember in the Cinderella-based 1998 episode Shoeless that Tamera (Tamera Mowry) and Jordan (Deon Richmond) dance to “Slow Jam” by Usher and Monica, but the Netflix version see the pair dancing to Bellringer’s Runnin, which was released in 2009.

But before you start drafting an angry tweet towards Netflix, it would appear that it’s not actually the streaming giant’s fault or choice not to have the episode in its original glory.

According to a report by Yahoo! Life, the switch came after Sister Sister was syndicated for other networks, with even the DVD versions of the series featuring the change.

While it’s not immediately clear what’s prompted the change, the most likely answer is licensing rights: wither Sister Sister’s contract ran out or Slow Jam was just too expensive to keep licencing.

The show followed twins Tamera and Tia (Tia Mowry), who are separated at birth – with one being adopted by a single mother while the other is adopted by a couple in the suburbs. By a chance encounter, they are reunited.

A hit during its time, the show was cancelled in 1999 after six seasons, but has since been touted for a modern-day reboot.

Jackeé Harry, who starred in the original series, teased a new iteration of the show was on the way in 2018, but there have been no further updates as of 2020.
