This is why the police helicopter was out above Trafford and south Manchester in the middle of the night

The police helicopter was deployed overnight as part of the hunt for a burglary suspect found hiding in a garden it can be confirmed.

Residents across south Manchester and Trafford reported being woken by the force chopper hovering around the area at around 3:30am in the early hours of this morning (Thursday).

An officer from Greater Manchester Police's (GMP) Trafford division said National Police Air Service (NPAS) helicopter had been drafted in along with dog units and traffic officers after a burglary in the Old Trafford area.

A suspect was later found hiding in a garden and arrested.

In a post on Twitter, Urmston neighbourhood officer Connor Gallogly said: "With the help of @NPASNorthWest, #TraffordWestArea officers arrested a male for burglary in Old Trafford last night.

"Following reports of a burglary, Trafford officers, @gmptraffic & @GMPDogs contained the area.

"NPAS located a male hiding in a garden.
