This is why the night sky in Trafford had a 'spooky' green glow this week

This is the moment two huge gas holders were illuminated bright green to support clean energy - which gave the Trafford night sky a spooky glow.

United Utilities illuminated the giant green orbs in support of Manchester's Big Clean Switch campaign, which encourages people across the city to switch to green gas and electricity.

The two gas holders are at the Davyhulme Treatment Centre and store biogas - a renewable form of energy.

Chris Matthews, head of sustainability for United Utilities, said: “We really believe in this, which is why we wanted to support the Big Clean Switch.

"These huge gas holders are where we store biogas after we’ve manufactured it from Manchester’s toilet waste. Once the gas is cleaned up we can either use it ourselves to generate electricity or inject it back into the local gas grid for use by local people.”

Last year, United Utilities agreed that 90% of its energy bills could be from renewable sources.

Several other landmarks across Manchester are also being lit up as part of the campaign, to encourage people to switch to green gas and electricity.

Why was the sky over Trafford green on Monday evening?

Manchester Cathedral, the Etihad Stadium, and several town halls are being lit up every night this week.

The campaign, which is run by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, aims to cut emissions down to 49 per cent of their 1990 levels by 2020.
