This is why the lights keep flickering on and off in Bristol tonight

People across many parts of Bristol experienced short power cuts and flickering lights and appliances this evening as engineers worked to fix a high voltage fault.

Power went out to more than 100 homes initially in two areas either side of the River Avon - but many more homes are understood to have been affected by flickering lights and power outages.

The high voltage fault hit at just after 7pm and knocked out electricity completely to around 30 properties in the St Philip’s Marsh area of the city, and scores more in the Totterdown area.

Engineers from Western Power Distribution quickly restored power to dozens of homes, and that left 58 in and around the New Walls and Angers Road area near the Three Lamps junction.

But the work by the engineers also affected power right across south Bristol and into east Bristol too.

People as far away as Whitchurch, Hengrove, Knowle and St George reported their lights flicking on and off, televisions blacking out and fuse boxes tripping, as engineers re-routed the grid and tried to restore power to people in the city.

One parent said on Facebook that her daughter's football training session at Brislington School was cancelled due to the outage.

A spokesperson for Western Power Distribution said: “Engineers are working to isolate a high voltage fault which can cause an intermittency. Our apologies for this.”

The spokesperson advised anyone whose power had gone off but not completely back on again, to untrip the trip switches in their fuse boxes, as they may well have been affected by the fault.

Work was expected to continue until 11pm.
