This is why some Bristolians will head to the polls next week

Voters in Brislington East will be returning to the polls next week for a by-election.

The seat was made vacant near the end of last year following the death of long serving Bristol councillor Mike Langley.

Mr Langley served as the Labour and Cooperative Party councillor for the ward since 2011 until his death in October – making him one of the longest-serving members of the Bristol Labour group.

Following his death tributes flooded in from his colleagues in City Hall who described him as a “principled socialist” who relentlessly championed his local ward, Brislington East.

A by-election for the vacant seat will take place on Thursday, January 16.

Polling stations across the ward will be open from 7am to 10pm on the day.

The Brislington East ward is served by two councillors. It covers the eastern part of Brislington as well as Broomhill and St Anne's Park

Former Conservative turned Liberal Democrat councillor Tony Carey is the other member representing the ward.

The candidates standing in the by-election:

Tara Murray - Liberal Democrats

Isaac Price-Sosner - Green Party

Timothy Rippington - Labour

Richard Williams - Conservatives

However the winning candidate won’t have much of a chance to do anything as a councillor other than fight for re-election in four months time.

The Bristol City Council elections and the third ever election for city mayor will take place on May 7.

All 70 seats will be up for grabs in May - which means all 34 wards across the city will be heading to the polls.

Why do we use a pencil to vote at polling stations?

Labour currently has control of the chamber - with almost double the amount of councillors of any other party.

So whoever wins next week in Brislington East could potentially lose their seat in May after serving less than four months as a councillor.

Bristol City Council has said that it constitutionally has to advertise when a seat on the council becomes vacant.

Then if two or more 'local government electors' within the constituency request a by-election in writing then one has to be held.
