This is why protesters were in Old Market Square this weekend

Up to 300 people took part in a protest march to highlight transgender rights.

Maryam Din, who organised the event, said between 200 to 300 people marched from the Forest Recreation Ground, down Mansfield Road and into the city centre on Saturday, July 10.

They were also joined by Black Lives Matter protesters.

There were some delays to buses while the protest took place.

They then met at the Brian Clough statue, where a number of speakers took to the microphone to discuss what needed to change to ensure the transgender community were given equal rights.

The Government is believed to have made a controversial U-turn on reforms that would make it easier for transgender and non-binary people to legally recognise their gender.

Boris Johnson is reported to have ditched plans to update the Gender Recognition Act (GRA) which would have allowed transgender people to change their birth certificates without medical diagnosis.

Maryam Din said: "Instead of supporting trans people to self identify, instead of making the procedure so time consuming and less costly they have chosen to make trans people's lives harder.

"Nottingham feels like a very positive place which you can see from the protest today.

"How passionate people are. We had the Black Lives Matter coming along with us because we know all these repressions are interlinked with one another."
