This is why one lane of the M4 Severn Bridge is closed tonight

Disruption is likely for some time on the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge after 100 metres of barrier was destroyed during a crash.

Minor delays remain on the Second Severn crossing this evening (Friday) following miles of tailbacks earlier today.

Earlier traffic was temporarily held after the collision with two lanes closed on the east side of the motorway between 23 (Caldicot) to J22 (Pilning).

A spokesman for Highways England said at the time: "M4 eastbound J23 (Caldicot) to J22 (Pilning) we are on route to an RTC.

"Lanes 2 and 3 are closed on the eastbound carriageway and lane 3 is closed on the westbound carriageway due to the central reservation being severely damaged.

"Expect delays on approach."

The smash occurred on the east side of the motorway between 23 (Caldicot) to J22 (Pilning) at around 5pm.

Although one lane has re-opened one lane on the bridge will remain closed in both directions, according to Highways England.

A spokesperson tweeted: "Lane three will remain closed in both directions due to the severity of the barrier damage.

"Over 100 metres of barrier is flat to the ground. Lane closures and speed restrictions will remain in place for safety reasons.

"We will update you when we have further information."
