This is why military helicopters were flying over Bristol today

The Ministry of Defence has revealed why a number of military helicopters and planes have been flying over Bristol today (Tuesday).

Earlier this month, Chinook helicopters were spotted by residents across the city, prompting online speculation as to why they had been called out.

Today, different types of aircraft flew over the south west of England region - including Hercules, Puma and Chinooks.

A spokeswoman for the RAF told Bristol Live : "The RAF has been completing essential routine flying training in the South west of England today, aircraft in the region included Hercules, Puma and Chinooks."

Earlier this year, Avon and Somerset Police said the force takes part in training with the Royal Air Forces to help officers' professional development.

It went on to tell residents 'don't be alarmed' if they see military helicopters landing and taking off in the force area.
