'This is why I love Byker': Man pops to Wetherspoon on Shields Road for a pint - on a horse

There have been some interesting sights on Shields Road over the years, but this may take the biscuit.

Or should that be Seabiscuit, after someone popped to Wetherspoons for a pint - by horse.

Stunned passersby couldn't believe their eyes when they noticed the horse tethered to the railing outside The High Main over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Pub sources claim the owner is a "regular" although the firm admits it isn't the punter's usual method of transport to get there.

“The horse owner is known at the pub, although this isn’t a regular occurrence," said a spokesman for JD Wetherspoon.

“The horse is very gentle, good natured and well behaved and the owner could see her from inside the pub."

Passer-by Craig Dixon was so staggered he took a snap.

"This is why you've got to love Byker," he posted as the caption on Facebook.

"Cos where else could you leave a horse outside Wetherspoon's and go for a pint."

But anybody who fancies taking their horse for a pint should just remember to just have the one.

A rarely used Victorian law means it is actually illegal to be drunk in charge of a horse on the road.

In 2014, a North Yorkshire man was prosecuted under section 12 of the licensing act of 1871 - but he escaped with a conditional discharge.

And anybody else who fancies a quick hoof   should follow the Wetherspoon punter's lead - and ensure there is enough space for everybody else to get past.

“The large pavement area also still allowed space for access for pedestrians, wheelchairs and pushchairs," added the firm's spokesperson.
