This is why history could be made by Nottingham Forest at Wigan Athletic

History could be made on Sunday when Nottingham Forest face Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium.

Forest are yet to taste victory on any of their previous seven visits to the home of the Latics and a win in front of the television cameras this weekend would put an end to that run, whilst also keeping the Reds in the Championship’s automatic promotion places.

Despite having failed to win at the DW Stadium before, the Reds have only been beaten twice since their first visit in November 2003 which ended in a 2-2 draw – and stalemates have been the theme of things when these pair meet – five of those seven have ended all square including last season’s 2-2 thriller, with three of the last six on Trentside finishing with honours even.

The Reds have not lost in the last five meetings, their last reverse came in March 2014 when Wigan romped to a 4-1 victory at the City Ground.

Sabri Lamouchi’s Reds, so impressive and unbeaten on the road this season will be wary of Wigan’s home form, however, which is impressive despite their lowly league position - their one and only defeat in the last 15 on home soil came when Leeds were 2-0 winners earlier this season.

A further example of just how strong Paul Cook’s men are in front of their home fans, is the fact they’ve kept 14 clean sheets at the DW since the start of last season, more than any other club in the division.

In fact, Forest are the only side in the second tier to have scored in all 11 games and have done so from the joint-fewest shots, just 33 – and who do they share that honour with?

Wigan, of course.

That said, Forest will travel to Lancashire, backed by more than 3,000 supporters in fine fettle, having gone 10 games unbeaten in the league, the club’s best run since they went 13 without defeat in 2016 under Dougie Freedman.
