This is why emergency services were in Bristol last night

Emergency services were called to St Phillips last night (June 2) to rescue a man and his dog from the bank of the River Avon.

Firefighters from Bedminster, Temple and Southmead, as well as ambulance crews, were called to the scene at around 11.45pm.

On arrival, they found a man in his 40s stranded on the river bank with his dog.

Ambulance crews stabilised the man while firefighters set up a stretcher and winch to drag the man back to shore.

The casualty was then taken to hospital for further treatment.

A spokesman for Avon Fire and Rescue said: "Fire crews from Bedminster, Temple and Southmead attended the incident at around 11.45pm.

"They discovered one male casualty in his 40s on the river bank with his dog.

"He was rescued and attended to by ambulance crews."

Bedminster fire station added on Twitter : "Overnight, we rescued a man and his dog from the bank of the River Avon in St Philips.

"@SwasFt crew stabilised the man as we set up a stretcher and winch to drag him back to shore. He was then taken to hospital for treatment."

South Western Ambulance Service has been contacted for comment.
