This is why dozens of people will be meditating on College Green tomorrow

College Green on a weekend afternoon is often filled with sunbathers, dog walkers and occasionally the odd protest.

But this weekend there's going to be quite an unusual sight on the patch of grass which lies between the council building and Bristol Cathedral.

Between midday and 1pm on May 10, there will be a group of people meditating as part of the UK-wide Moments of Mass Mindfulness initiative, led by a qualified mindfulness teacher.

The group session marks the beginning of Mental Health Awareness Week.

It's official - Bristol is the best city in the UK for eating out

Bristol, Nottingham, Weston super Mare and Clevedon have been growing Moments of Mass Mindfulness since 2016 with an increasing number of people taking part each year.

What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is a technique which helps people manage stress and their mental health as well as simply gain more pleasure from life.

It involves making a special effort to bring full attention to what is happening in the present moment – to what is happening in your mind, body and surroundings.

Research is showing that mindfulness can help people manage their stress and support their mental health as well as gain more pleasure from life.

The aim of this event is to bring mindfulness into communities and promote the benefits of mindfulness practice for good mental health.

"This will feel really powerful"

Simon Barnes of Bristol Mindfulness, a network of qualified Bristol mindfulness teachers, said: “We staged Moments of Mass Mindfulness in Castle Park last year, but this year we will be synchronising our event with many other MOMMs in locations across the UK and beyond.

"This will feel really powerful with people across the country falling silent and being guided in mindfulness at the same time.

"Everyone is welcome to join in, especially people new to mindfulness.

"We want to offer you the chance to stop, be in the present moment and bring an attitude of kindness towards you and those around you."

Jacky Slade from the Bristol Mindful Parenting Community Project said: "When we make a special effort to really notice what is happening in the present moment, we begin to find the space to make more informed choices when faced with difficulty or challenge.

"It is really about paying a special sort of attention rather than trying to empty the mind, ‘zoning out’ or being passive so we really hope that a lot of people will show up on May 11 and find out more."

Mental Health Awareness Week

Mental Health Awareness Week runs from May 13 to May 18 and aims to create conversation, beat the stigma and raise funds for mental health charities.

The theme for this year's awareness week is body image, exploring how we think and feel about our own bodies.

Over the course of the week there will also be an Autism and Mental Health Day, desk-based yoga, a rave at Blue Mountain and much more.
