This is why Blackpill Lido in Swansea is shut, even though the weather is still gorgeous

Swansea 's Blackpill Lido has closed for the year, despite September's Indian Summer forecast .

Some families have been left confused by the council's decision to close the free lido, after finding it fenced off while the weather remains warm.

The lido has already been forced to shut twice this summer due to vandalism .

However, its recent closure on September 1 is down to a council decision, prompted by the shifting seasons and the end of the school holidays.

That has left some people mystified.

One person commenting on Facebook said they had been to Aberavon Beach and seen loads of people enjoying the paddling pool there at the weekend.

"Then we come back to Swansea and get to Blackpill only to see the Lido fenced off. Why do Swansea Council close these facilities down, what I feel is early in the season, when there are still opportunities for people to use them in the glorious weather we're having," they said.

Other people agreed the lido should stay open for longer if the weather was still decent.

So why does Swansea Council open and close the lido on specific dates?

A spokesman for Swansea Council said: “The Blackpill Lido paddling pool is a free attraction that is enjoyed by thousands of families every summer and will be open again next year.

“This year it was open daily for the summer from Saturday, May 25, to Sunday, September 1, and the lido is staffed every day the pool is in use.

“The opening dates reflect the periods when the weather should be good and coincides with the half-term and summer school holidays.

“Once the season is over the pool is drained and it takes more than 48 hours to refill and make it suitable for public bathing so, unfortunately, we could not simply re-open on days when the weather is unusually warm.”
