This is why armed police closed a road near Bristol city centre

Armed police descended on St Jude this evening after reports of a concern for welfare.

Following the incident, a man was detained by officers at the scene.

Several police cars, vans and a dog unit attended an address of Ann Street on Tuesday (September 3) at around 6pm.

The route was temporarily closed while officers attempted to reach the man.

When are armed police allowed to fire?

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: "Armed officers were deployed as a cautionary measure while they attended a concerns for welfare.

"The man has been caught and detained."

A witness at the scene told Bristol Live : "It looks more serious than a welfare check. Police dogs, armed police, flat being boarded up."

Someone else tweeted: "Whatever’s going on in St Jude’s looks serious and sensitive. A man passing by said that bystanders had been shouted at to move away."
