This is why 'armed' military aircraft were seen above the skies of Litherland

Video footage has captured the moment a military helicopter was above the skies of Merseyside.

The video shows one of several Royal Air Force Puma choppers spotted above houses in Litherland on Wednesday.

But fear not, the impressive helicopters were carrying troops from 4 Para and 4 Lancs Army Reserves as Puma Force conducted pre-deployment training ahead of deployment to Afghanistan later this year.

The Puma helicopters from 33 Squadron, which are based in RAF Woodvale just off the Formby bypass, are flying during the day and night using a variety of authorised helicopter landing sites across Merseyside , West Lancashire.

They are also training in Manchester where one eyewitness tweeted to say that he could see the aircraft from his garden and spotted crew 'aiming their machine guns out the side'.

The training began on Monday and is taking place until Friday.

It is designed to replicate the unfamiliarity with areas in Afghanistan in a safe environment prior to their deployment later in the year.

Puma helicopters are used to transport troops, weapons, ammunition and stores on the battlefield and to evacuate casualties and respond to medical emergencies

During the training, the crews are working with four Para and four Lancs Army Reserves to ensure the British Army maintain their familiarity with the Puma helicopter ahead of future operational deployments.
