This is why a giant military aircraft was seen flying over Liverpool

Dozens of ECHO readers have contacted us about a large military-style plane seen circling over Liverpool.

One expert witness claimed the plane looks a Boeing C-17 Globemaster which were used to ferry American troops in the 1980s.

It was seen flying over the city this afternoon.

A member of the public, who asked not be named, sent a photograph of the plane into the ECHO.

A spokesman for John Lennon Airport said to the ECHO that a RAF C-17 from RAF Brize Norton used the airport for crew training purposes this afternoon.

 The C-17 us a long range, heavy-lift strategic aircraft that can be used for combat, peacekeeping or humanitarian missions all over the world.

The plane can carry loads of up to  to 45,000 kg over 8,000 km, and fly at altitudes over 35,000 ft.

According to the RAF website, C-17 is capable of rapid, strategic delivery of troops and all types of cargo from Chinook helicopters to military vehicles and other heavy items of specialist kit.
