This is why a fleet of luxury cars with police escort swept through Liverpool today

A fleet of luxury cars escorted by police were seen travelling through Liverpool city centre today.

People across the city took to social media to speculate who was driving around Merseyside in the fancy convoy after the vehicles were seen entering and exiting the Birkenhead tunnel.

Video footage shows police officers on motorbikes stopping traffic on The Strand to clear a passage for the convoy that arrived in the city on Thursday night.

Police were seen at Lime Street Station , surrounding a number of large Range Rovers and luxury vehicles that would be used to transport a VIP guest to the city.

The VIP in question was Princess Anne on an official engagement to a centre in the Wirral that supplies accommodation to the homeless.

The Princess Royal was in Merseyside to open Wirral Churches Ark Project's newly renovated Mary Cole House in Birkenhead.

Wirral Ark is a regisitered charity that aims to rehouse and support rough sleepers.

Mary Cole House, which Princess Anne reopened today, is a state-of-the-art hostel, based close to Hamilton Square, that houses 27 rooms, a training room, open courtyard and numerous breakout spaces and rooms for people to meet and socialise.

During her visit to Liverpool and Wirral, a private helicopter was also spotted over the city but it is not known whether it was used to transport the princess.
