This is where the contestants abseiled during I'm a Celebrity 2020 - and it's nowhere near the castle

The highly anticipated I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here! made a welcome return to screens last with its first ever UK-based series.

The opening scenes saw the celebs being dropped off by helicopter at an unnamed rural location before having to abseil down a cliff, marking a wild entrance to the show.

With phenomenal views of the Welsh landscape as the contestants descended down the rock face, viewers were left wondering where exactly the celebs had landed.

While producers at ITV did not confirm where the cast had filmed the scenes, locals have seemingly revealed the location, reports North Wales Live.

While it was clear the opening shots were not filmed at the main set at Gwrych Castle, speculation began to mount that they were filmed on a cliff in Snowdonia.

However it has now been pinpointed to a stunning location on the Isle of Anglesey.

The abseil scene - which saw DJ Jordan North throwing up after being challenged to plunge down the cliff face - was actually filmed against the backdrop of Penmon, a small village east of the tourist hub of Beaumaris.

The challenge itself appeared to take place in the historic Flagstaff Quarry, a now-disused limestone quarry located on the island's coastline - and almost 40 miles from the main camp at Gwrych Castle in Abergele.

Those who tuned in were treated to an awe-inspiring view of the north Wales coastline as cameras panned across the area while the celebs embraced the challenge.

Viewers could also see Puffin Island and its lighthouse in the background, as they're just over a mile away.

The celebrities were clearly impressed by the view, including Jessica Plummer.

The former Eastenders actress said: "Look at this, it's stunning. I wish I had my phone to take a picture."

After the abseiling challenge, all 10 celebrity campmates were taken to the camp at the castle.

Contestants include Coronation Street legend Beverley Callard and Bolton TV presenter Vernon Kay.

It is understood the contestants will remain at the Abergele site for the remaining three weeks of the series - although there is speculation they'll head out for other challenges in the surrounding area.

The series started with a bang last night opening with an average of 10.9m across its slot from 9pm to 10.30pm - its biggest audience since the 2018 final - and becoming the most-watched non-news programme of 2020

The new series of I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here! continues tonight on ITV at 9pm.
