This Is Where I Leave You review – Tina Fey is let down by this nonsense

Replace the words “leave you” in the title with “throw up”. This humourless piece of pseudo-bittersweet hugging’n’learning nonsense is intolerable and it is as painful as a paper cut to realise that Tina Fey is in it. Tina Fey! The genius behind TV’s 30 Rock! The fact that she sells it like a trouper makes the feeling even worse.

Jason Bateman plays another of his opaque, prickly and vulnerable roles as a guy whose marriage breaks up just as his dad dies, so he must go home for the funeral to face an adorable anthology of siblings with all their spouses and their issues: Adam Driver, Corey Stoll, Timothy Olyphant – and Fey.

Personal growth, grieving, self-forgiveness and family are the deadly serious themes of this deadly dramedy. Like August Osage County, only even more fatuous. Stately Jane Fonda takes the Streepish role as the irrepressible matriarch, who plays every supposedly uproarious line as if it has been translated from the Portuguese.
