This is when your bins will be collected over Christmas and New Year

As the holiday season approaches most people are worried about Christmas shopping and where to get the best deals on those traditional festive foods.

But there is one thing that always causes concern over the festive season - and that's when do to put the rubbish out for collection.

As with every year, there will be no rubbish collections on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day.

This year Christmas Day falls on a Wednesday. So across Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset there will be no collections on Wednesday, December 25, Thursday, December 26 or Wednesday, January 1.

All three councils use a different rubbish collection contractor, but they have all agreed to put on extra staff to work three extra Saturdays to catch up – December 28, January 4 and January 11.

As a result, collection dates between December 25 and January 10 will take place on a different weekday.

Collection dates in Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset will all return to normal from Monday, January 13.

Bristol Waste has also put together a video for households in the city explaining what items can be recycled and which container to put them in. Check it out here.

And South Gloucestershire Council has provided a list of helpful hints to make sure collections run smoothly:

  • flatten your cardboard boxes and cut up large boxes
  • rinse out your bottles, jars, cans and plastics to remove food
  • sort your recycling to keep similar items together
  • put your containers out by 7am on your collection day, even if we don’t normally collect from your house first thing
  • put extra recycling out in plastic bags, keeping similar items together in one bag
  • don’t put paper or greetings cards with glitter, metal or plastic on them in your recycling
  • if your collection has not taken place by 6pm on the scheduled day, please report it, take your containers back on to your property and put them back out for collection by 7am the next day (including Saturday).
