This is when you're now allowed to drive to other destinations - and how far

For almost two months people in the UK have got used to travelling only for essential journeys.

Many cars have stayed parked on driveways or locked away in garages, with people following lockdown rules and only travelling for reasons like going shopping, or attending medical appointments.

But today (Sunday, May 10) Prime Minister Boris Johnson has revealed more details about how lockdown measures will be eased in the upcoming months.

In it, he said people can now drive to other destinations.

More people are also being encouraged to go to work - but only if they cannot work from home. At the same time, people are being asked to avoid public transport and instead travel by car, bicycle or by walking.

When can people drive more freely?

The changes do not come in to place until Wednesday, but from then people can drive to other destinations providing social distancing is observed when they are there. It's important to note, the rules in Wales now differ from those in England - so people should not drive across the border from Bristol to Wales as they would be breaking Welsh lockdown rules and would risk a fine.

Mr Johnson said: "From this Wednesday, we want to encourage people to take more and even unlimited amounts of outdoor exercise.

"You can sit in the sun in your local park, you can drive to other destinations, you can even play sports but only with members of your own household.

"You must obey the rules on social distancing and to enforce those rules we will increase the fines for the small minority who break them."

Mr Johnson did not reveal if there are any restrictions on how far people can travel, but his six-point plan does encourage people to stay at home "as much as possible".

It also says people should work from home if they can, limit contact with other people, keep a two-metre distance between others when out and about and wash your hands regularly. Anyone with symptoms should self isolate, alongside the rest of their household.
