This is when parks in Newport will reopen

Public parks in Newport are due to reopen after closing because of the coronavirus lockdown.

Newport City Council said the parks will reopen on Monday, May 11 .

The council announced on Thursday, May 7, that all council-run parks will remain closed over the Bank Holiday weekend but will reopen on Monday between 8am and 4pm .

However, certain areas will remain closed such as play areas, outdoor gym equipment or facilities (eg mini golf), multi use games facilities and tennis courts, and public toilets and changing rooms.

Sports pitches, of any size or type, must only be used for general exercise, not for games/matches.

Since March all gated parks in the city have been closed to both pedestrians and vehicles.

The council said social distancing guidelines must continue to be followed in the facilities and existing restrictions from Welsh Government adhered to.

Coronavirus: When will the lockdown end?

The council said: "It is important not to breach any fences, closed gates, sectioned off areas and closed park facilities. We appreciate your continued support.

"Residents are also reminded of the clear advice issued by Welsh Government regarding non-essential travel.

"Exercise should be taken close to your home and you should not travel for this purpose.

"The original decision to close parks was not taken lightly but we hope people understand that the priority was, and continues to be, keeping people safe and preventing further spread of the virus."
